Functional genomics is the study of how genes and intergenic regions of the genome contribute to different biological processes.A researcher in this field typically studies genes or regions on a “genome-wide” scale (i.e. all or multiple genes/regions at the same time), with the hope of narrowing them down to a list of candidate genes or regions to analyse in more detail.

APPROVED BY: Functional Genomics Core COVID-19 Continuity of Operations. The University of Arizona is committed to: The health and safety of students, faculty, staff, researchers and designated campus colleagues; The continuity of research operations with modifications to observe CDC guidelines to minimize disease transmission; Ensuring laboratory safety that minimizes risk to human and animal subjects 2018-12-01 ADVERTISEMENTS: The below mentioned article provides biology notes on functional genomics. Functional genomics is to place all of the genes in the genome of an organism within a functional frame work. Actually, in every organism about 12-15% genes are structural genes which are expressed for certain characters.

Functional genomics ncsu

Functional genomics encompasses gene discovery, gene expression, protein and nucleic acid structure and function, gene and gene product interactions, and genomic approaches to breeding and comparative studies relevant to ecology and evolutionary biology. Students in the Functional Genomics program will focus on one or more of these areas.

Students can select to major in animal science and focus their coursework and research project in the genetics and/or genomics area. We offer five different degrees, MR (non-thesis master’s degree; i.e. no research) and PhD in Bioinformatics, and MR, MS, and PhD in Functional Genomics. Our Bioinformatics program emphasizes statistical and computational approaches, PhD dissertations would likely involve development of new algorithms for data analysis.
